Westwood and McNeil High Schools are sponsoring an ApplyTexas Application Boot Camp which will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2014, at McNeil High School. Senior students from McNeil and Westwood are strongly encouraged to participate in this event. The Boot Camp is designed to assist students with their college application and essays. All students will begin working on their ApplyTexas college application as well as receive feedback on their essays. The event will be staffed by college admissions counselors in the Austin region. Students should bring copies of their essays and their social security number.
- 9:30 to 10:00: Students will sign in at the cafeteria.
- 10:00 to 10:30 Short presentation and Q&A Session in the cafeteria
- 10:30 to 12:00: Students will work on their applications and have their essays evaluated.
Essay Topic A
Describe a setting in which you have collaborated or interacted with people whose experiences and/or beliefs differ from yours. Address your initial feelings, and how those feelings were or were not changed by this experience.
Essay Topic B
Describe a circumstance, obstacle or conflict in your life, and the skills and resources you used to resolve it. Did it change you? If so, how?
Essay Topic C
Considering your lifetime goals, discuss how your current and future academic and extra-curricular activities might help you achieve your goals.
Essays should be no more than 650 words and no less than 250 words
College Admissions Process Evening Presentation for Parents and Students
While the morning Boot Camp is for SENIORS only, an evening presentation has been scheduled for both parents and students from all RRISD high schools. Nick Howell from the University of Texas at Austin and Bob Baldwin from Southwestern University will provide an overview of the college admissions process as well as provide information about the UT-Austin and Southwestern application process. This event will be held at the RRISD PAC: 5800 McNeil Dr, Austin, TX 78729
- 6:30: Doors will open for parents and students to speak with the admission reps and pick up recruitment materials.
- 7:00: Presentation
- 8:00: Admissions reps available for questions.
